Over the years, I’ve found myself returning to the same handful of newborn photography poses again and again. Not because they’re trendy, but because they’re timeless. These poses highlight connection, scale, and the fleeting details that change faster than we ever expect.
Here are five newborn photography poses I always include, and why they matter.

This pose is a favorite for many parents — and for good reason. When baby is gently placed on their tummy, it naturally shows off those soft newborn rolls, tiny shoulders, and delicate profile.
It’s a simple pose, but one that captures how new and perfectly formed your baby truly is. These are the details that feel so familiar in the moment, yet are often the first to fade from memory.

There’s something incredibly powerful about scale.
Placing baby in Dad’s hands instantly shows just how small they were in those early days. This pose isn’t about perfection — it’s about perspective. It highlights strength, protection, and the quiet beginning of a lifelong bond.
It’s also a beautiful opportunity to capture delicate details like baby’s hair, fingers, and tiny features in a way that feels natural and understated.

This pose is always close to my heart.
There’s something so instinctual about the way moms hold their babies — especially in those first few weeks. Baby resting on mom’s chest feels safe, familiar, and deeply comforting.
It’s a go-to pose not only because it photographs beautifully, but because it reflects real life. It mirrors how you likely held your baby at home, in quiet moments that felt ordinary then — and priceless later.

This is a classic for a reason.
A simple, connected pose with both parents and baby tells the story of togetherness — the moment your family became whole. There’s no pressure to pose or perform here. Just closeness, calm, and the shared joy of holding your newborn between you.
These images often become favorites because they feel timeless, emotional, and deeply meaningful years later.

Tiny fingers. Soft skin. Wrinkled hands. Newborn features change quickly — sometimes in just a matter of weeks.
Detail images slow everything down. They allow us to preserve the smallest parts of your baby’s story that are so easy to forget but so important to remember.
These images pair beautifully in albums and artwork, adding depth and emotion to your gallery.
Trends come and go, but meaningful images last.
Each of these newborn photography poses is chosen with intention — to highlight connection, preserve fleeting details, and create images that feel just as emotional years from now as they do today.
My goal is always to create a calm, unhurried experience where your baby’s story unfolds naturally, without forcing or overposing.
If you’re expecting and beginning to plan your newborn photos, know that you don’t need to plan every detail. I guide you through the entire process — from timing and styling to posing and artwork — so you can simply show up and enjoy this season.
