If you’ve started looking at photographers in Grand Forks ND, you’ve probably realized there are plenty of beautiful places for outdoor photos. While there are several locations around the area that I enjoy, I find myself returning to Turtle River State Park again and again.
It offers a variety of landscapes in one location, making it easy to create galleries that feel timeless and natural without traveling all over town. Whether you’re hoping for a golden sunset, a peaceful morning session, or simply a location that’s easy for little ones, there’s a spot here that’s perfect for your family.
Here’s a look at my favorite places inside the park and what makes each one unique.

Best Time: Mid-afternoon (around 3:00–4:00 PM)
If you’re hoping to avoid crowds, this is one of my favorite hidden gems. Tucked away from the main walking paths, this little creek feels quiet and private, which helps everyone relax during their session.
One of the biggest advantages of this location is the timing. Because the trees provide beautiful filtered light, we don’t have to wait until sunset. During the summer, when the sun doesn’t set until nearly 10:00 PM, this is a wonderful option for families with young children who are happiest earlier in the day.
If you’re looking for a peaceful setting with water, trees, and a little adventure, this is often the spot I recommend.
Why I love it for photographers in Grand Forks, ND:
Things to consider:

Best Time: Sunset (especially in the fall)
When fall arrives, this location becomes one of the prettiest places in the park. The evening sun filters through the trees, creating the warm golden light everyone imagines for autumn family photos.
The gentle hill gives children room to run, play, and explore naturally, leading to genuine smiles instead of forced poses. Just a short walk away is an open field, allowing us to create two completely different looks without changing locations.
If you’re dreaming of colorful leaves and glowing sunset light, this is the perfect choice.

Best Time: Sunrise
Not everyone loves staying up for a late summer sunset, especially with young children. That’s why I often recommend sunrise sessions in this beautiful open field.
The soft morning light creates bright, airy images while the park is peaceful and quiet. Because the field is so open, the sunrise light wraps beautifully around your family, creating timeless portraits with plenty of space to play.
For families with early risers, this is one of my favorite locations in Turtle River State Park.

Best Time: Mid-morning
This spot is one of the most versatile locations in the park. Thanks to the shade from the large tree, we can photograph here during the middle of the morning while still creating soft, flattering light.
Another reason I love this location is how easy it is to reach. Unlike the secluded creek, there’s very little walking involved, making it an excellent choice for grandparents, young children, or anyone who prefers an easily accessible session location.
Simple, timeless, and beautiful, it’s a location that works wonderfully throughout the season.

Every family is different, and the “best” location depends on your schedule, your children’s ages, and the look you love most.
| Location | Best Time | Perfect For |
|---|---|---|
| Secluded Creek | 3:00–4:00 PM | Families wanting privacy and an earlier session |
| Hill by the Warming House | Sunset | Fall sessions and golden light |
| Field by the Visitor Center | Sunrise | Bright, airy images and early-rising families |
| Under the Tree | Mid-morning | Easy access and flexible scheduling |
As one of the photographers in Grand Forks ND, I love helping families choose the location that fits their vision and their schedule. If you’re not sure which spot is best, don’t worry—that’s exactly what I’m here for. Together we’ll choose a location that makes your session feel relaxed, fun, and completely you.
I can’t wait to photograph your family at one of these beautiful spots in Turtle River State Park.
