5 Tips for Helping Your Kids Welcome a New Baby

As a mother of two precious girls, I deeply understand the mix of excitement and concern that comes with introducing your new baby to their older sibling. It’s natural to wonder how your firstborn will adapt—will they feel a pang of jealousy, or will they embrace their new role with joy?

This tender transition is a milestone not just for your baby but for your entire family. Here are a few heartfelt tips to help foster a loving bond between your little ones, making this journey as seamless and special as it deserves to be:

1. Make it “their” baby before baby arrives. From the moment I learned I was expecting, I made a point to involve my oldest daughter in the journey. Every time I talked about the baby growing in my belly, I would lovingly refer to her as “your baby sister” or “our new baby.” These small but meaningful words planted a sense of belonging and connection even before they met.

2. Let them choose a gift for the baby. Before my youngest arrived, I took my oldest on a special shopping date—a memory I treasure to this day. She carefully picked out a gift for her baby sister (with a little gentle guidance) and chose the wrapping paper to make it uniquely hers. Watching her excitement as she presented her thoughtful gift was one of the sweetest moments of all.

3. Surprise them with a gift from the baby. To make our eldest feel just as celebrated, I secretly bought a gift from her baby sister to give her when they met. Seeing her light up as she opened her surprise made her feel cherished and reminded her that this wasn’t just a celebration of the baby—it was a celebration of her role as a big sister, too.

4. Let them meet baby on their terms. When it was time for introductions, I made sure not to overwhelm our oldest. Instead of holding the baby myself, we placed her in her car seat on the coffee table, giving my eldest the space to greet us first and observe her new sister from a comfortable distance. This gentle approach allowed her to warm up naturally and ask to hold the baby when she was ready.

5. Include them in baby care and celebrate their role. Small acts of inclusion can work wonders. We asked our eldest if she’d like to help with tasks like holding the baby’s bottle or fetching diapers and pacifiers. Each time she helped, we showered her with praise, telling her what an incredible big sister and helper she was. These moments made her feel valued and connected, as if she were an essential part of the baby’s life.
